We Did It Again! Austin Chef Takes Home James Beard Foundation Award

For the second year in a row, an Austin chef takes home the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef: Southwest. At the awards ceremony this evening, Paul Qui, Executive Chef of Uchiko, was announced the recipient.

Commemorate Cinco de Mayo with a Celebration of Mexican Heritage and Culture

Cinco de Mayo is a date observed in Mexico (primarily in the state of Puebla) and in the United States to commemorate the outnumbered Mexican army’s victory over French forces on May 5, 1862 in the Battle of Puebla. Cinco de Mayo has been confused by some with Mexican Independence Day, which is actually September 16, the date commemorating Mexico’s independence from Spain.

Throughout Central Texas, Cinco de Mayo is interpreted as a time for celebration of its Mexican heritage and culture. Following are some of the festivities taking place across the area this weekend:

The Inaugural Austin Food & Wine Festival

The inaugural Austin Food & Wine Festival, presented by Food & Wine Magazine, kicks off this weekend, April 27 – 29. Join top chefs, sommeliers, and winemakers from around the country for this premier epicurean event benefiting the Austin Food & Wine Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering awareness and innovation in the Central Texas culinary community through grants, educational programming, and events.
